06Machines and items you need
The basic mushroom farming unit needs these items. Total cost is ₹5 lakh — building/civil ₹3 lakh, machinery ₹50 thousand and working capital ₹1.2 lakh.
| Item | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Chaff cutter | Cuts wheat/paddy straw into 2–5 cm pieces |
| Pasteurisation drum / boiler | Sterilises straw with hot water or steam |
| Bamboo or iron racks | To hang/stack bags and use the room fully |
| Fogger / humidifier | Keeps 80–90% humidity in the fruiting room |
| Exhaust fan | Fresh air, removes CO₂ |
| Thermometer-hygrometer | Daily check of temperature and humidity |
| Weighing scale and sealer | For 200 g / 1 kg packs |
| Per-batch supplies | Spawn, poly bags, straw, chemicals — part of working capital |
Before the DPR, take fresh quotations from 2–3 suppliers — the bank asks for them.
07How the work is done — from start to sale
- Prepare straw: Chop the straw and soak it for 12–16 hours.
- Sterilise: Pasteurise with hot water/steam or the chemical method, then cool.
- Fill bags: Mix spawn into the straw, fill poly bags and punch holes.
- Spawn run: Keep in a dark room for 18–25 days until the bags turn white.
- Fruiting: Cut the bags open; give light, 80–90% humidity and fresh air.
- Harvest: First picking in 3–5 days; each bag gives 2–3 flushes.
- Sell: Pack and sell the same day; dry what is left.
08Monthly view (year 3)
Yearly figures divided by 12, so you can see what comes in and goes out each month.
| Item | Per month |
|---|---|
| SalesMonthly average | ₹1.1 lakh |
| Total costRaw material, labour, power, interest and depreciation | ₹89 thousand |
| Net profitSales − total cost | ₹18 thousand |
| Loan instalment (EMI)₹3 lakh loan, 11% interest, 6 years (after 1-year moratorium) | ₹5,710 |
The bank checks that profit and depreciation cover the EMI comfortably. Sales will vary by season — keep 2–3 months of expenses aside.
09What if things change? (year-3 profit)
| Situation | Yearly profit |
|---|---|
| As estimated | ₹2.1 lakh |

| Selling price 20% lower | Loss ₹42 thousand |
